“You will know them by their fruits.” - Old Memphis Vandalization

In May, Kelly Kirschner was about to launch his campaign when word came that vandals had broken and defaced 17 graves at Old Memphis Cemetery in Palmetto. He postponed the kick-off. Instead of gathering to celebrate, he picked up a shovel and joined neighbors to clean up and restore the graves. Old Memphis is a Florida Heritage Site. Generations of African American families are buried there, many of whom farmed tomatoes, cabbage and citrus in the area’s truck fields and worked its packing houses. Their descendants told ABC7 what anyone would feel: this ground is sacred, and the people resting in it deserve respect. Kelly is a Georgetown Hoya. The school’s old cry, “Hoya Saxa,” has long stood for being stalwart, like a stone wall: steady, solid, and there when it counts. When the stones marking a community’s memory were broken, Kelly didn’t stand by. He showed up. Repairing the world begins close to home, one broken stone and one act of care at a time.
